If you visit Mexico for dental care, or are considering it, there’s an insurance option worth knowing about. Ameritas PrimeStar® individual dental plans offer access to a dental network that includes providers in both the United States and Mexico.
For Medicare beneficiaries, a separate dental policy may help fill a coverage gap. Original Medicare generally doesn’t cover routine cleanings, fillings, or dentures. Some Medicare Advantage plans include dental benefits, but covered services and provider networks vary by plan.
How does reimbursement in Mexico work?
Ameritas can reimburse members for covered dental services received outside the U.S., subject to their policy’s benefits and limitations. However, payment works differently than you might expect at a dentist’s office back home:
- Plan to pay up front. Dentists outside the U.S. typically require payment in full before treatment is completed.
- Benefits are paid to you. Ameritas sends reimbursement for eligible services directly to the insured member.
- Your policy determines the amount. Reimbursement may cover only part of your bill, depending on the service, deductible, benefit limits, and applicable coverage level.
Before scheduling treatment, confirm that the dentist participates in the network for your specific plan and ask Ameritas what claim forms and supporting records you’ll need. For more expensive work, request a pretreatment estimate to help understand your expected costs. An estimate is not a guarantee of payment.

What else do PrimeStar dental plans offer?
PrimeStar Care plans offer no waiting periods and include benefits for preventive, basic, and major dental services. Depending on the plan, covered services may include cleanings, fillings, crowns, root canals, and dentures.
Good news: Covered preventive services don’t reduce the annual benefit maximum available for basic and major care. Annual maximums increase after the first year, and certain coverage percentages also improve over time. No waiting period does not mean every service is paid in full immediately- first-year benefits and other policy limits still apply.
Explore your dental coverage options
Whether you prefer a dentist close to home or to receive care in Mexico, understanding your coverage before treatment can help you plan. Contact your health insurance broker to learn about Ameritas PrimeStar dental plans, review your existing dental benefits, and explore whether a separate policy fits your needs.
Benefits, availability, exclusions, and limitations vary by state and policy. Confirm provider participation and coverage before receiving treatment. Ameritas PrimeStar is separate dental insurance, not a Medicare plan.
